The Silk briefcase is ours, and it is the piece we point to first — full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather over a structured frame, solid brass throughout, closed on a brass key-lock. It carries our name because we are answerable for it: the leather, the hardware and the decisions behind both are ours to defend rather than a maker's to explain. It is built to be carried for a decade. The Chambers laptop bag is its counterpart for the commute — the same leather and the same hardware, organized for daily carry rather than for counsel table. Both carry the Barrister & Bespoke Five-Year Limited Warranty. If you are choosing one briefcase for the practice, that is the one we would choose.

Korchmar is a fourth-generation American workshop, in business since 1917, and its catalog cases are in our view the standard for the profession — the Workhorse, hand-carried; the Litigator, on wheels — for the trial week when the file has outgrown any briefcase. We do not make a catalog case and do not plan to, because there is nothing we would add. Korchmar also makes the Churchill briefcase, for the frame-top tradition and a 17-inch laptop. Time Resistance, in vegetable-tanned Italian Vachetta, carries the softer briefcase and anchors the women's line — the Sound of the Mountain briefcase, the Orlando laptop bag, the Shirley work tote, the Woman in White convertible tote, and the rest.

Three decisions come up more than any others, and we have argued all three in full, including the ones where the answer is not ours: The Churchill, or the Silk?; The Catalog Case: Hand Carry or Wheeled?; and The Shirley, or the Camilla?

Buy the piece that fits the way you carry, and you'll rarely choose wrong.

Questions lawyers ask us

Frame case or soft briefcase? A frame case (The Silk, the Churchill) stands up, closes with a lock and reads as formal; a soft briefcase (The Sound of the Mountain, The Chambers) carries more, weighs less and reads as daily. Choose for the room you walk into most.

Will a 15-inch laptop fit? The Churchill takes 17 inches and the Vendetta attaché 15; The Silk is sized for 16 inches; the Orlando and The Scarlet Letter tote are cut for 13 and 12 inches respectively. Each product page states its limit and we do not round up.

Which case for a trial week? A catalog case. The Workhorse if you carry it from the parking lot to the courtroom; the Litigator if the route runs through a terminal. Hand Carry or Wheeled? settles it.

What is the difference between the house line and Korchmar? Ours is designed to our specification and made for us alone in Kolkata; Korchmar is a fourth-generation American workshop building in its own factories. We do not make a catalog case and do not plan to — we would rather sell theirs.
