Lighting a fine cigar with a torch flame — the cigar ritual

Cigar Essentials

The cigar marks something in this profession, and rarely the cigar itself — the verdict that came back right, the signature on the last page, the vote that went your way. What the moment asks for is not a better cigar. It asks for a few tools that let you meet it without fumbling: something to cut the cap clean, something to light in a breeze off the terrace, somewhere to set the cigar down mid-sentence, and a stable seventy percent to keep the next one until the next occasion arrives.

That is the whole of this category, and we have tried to be honest about its range. A cedar-lined humidor that simply holds humidity and a hand-finished S.T. Dupont lighter are not the same kind of object, and we neither price nor describe them as if they were. Some of what follows earns its place on function and value — it works, and that is the argument. Some earns it on the maker's name alone. Both do the job; the difference is only how long you mean to keep it.

Two questions come up before almost any purchase here, and we have argued both in full. Whether to reach for a soft flame or a torch — and why the cut matters more than the cigar — is the subject of A Cigar, Counselor? And a humidor is not ready the day it arrives: season it wrong and you will spend a month wondering why your cigars went dry, which is the whole of Season It, or Ruin It?

Buy for the occasion you actually mark, not the one you picture, and you'll rarely choose wrong.

Preview — the collection opens Fall 2026. Prices and selection are shown in good faith; neither is guaranteed, and both may change before the collection opens. Ordering is not yet open; the shelves are being stocked. Join the Chambers below and we will write when the collection opens.

Lighters ship unfilled. Butane is a regulated flammable gas and we do not ship it, so a torch arrives dry and takes any triple-refined butane sold at any tobacconist.

Questions we are asked

Do you sell cigars? No — cutters, lighters, ashtrays and humidors only. Cigars shown in photographs are for illustration.

Why does my new lighter not light? Every lighter ships unfueled, as air transport rules require. It needs butane, which is widely available and which we do not ship.

Do I have to season a humidor? Yes, once, over two to three days, with distilled water. Skipping it is the most common reason a new humidor fails. Season It, or Ruin It? is the whole procedure.

What is the difference between Curated and Essentials here? S.T. Dupont and Xikar are curated for the maker's name and warranty; Prestige Import Group pieces are Essentials — stocked because the ritual needs one and this one does the job. Each page says which it is.
