What is here is Esterbrook and Pelikan. Esterbrook, the American pen name founded in Camden, New Jersey in 1858 and revived in 2018, makes the Estie in Ebony and in Nouveau Bleu — the profession's own color, and worth a word: an original signature in blue is the one a clerk can tell from a photocopy at a glance. Both barrels are turned from blended acrylic and polished, so no two are quite alike in figure.
On the Estie, the cushion cap is the working feature. It seats with a secondary seal that keeps the point from drying between uses, which is the difference between a pen that writes on the first stroke on Monday and one that skips.
Pelikan's Souverän R800, in black high-grade resin with 24-karat gold-plated trim, is the rollerball for the M800 owner: capped, it reads as the fountain pen across a room; uncapped, it lays the same wet line on whatever paper the other side brought, with a standard-format refill inside and a cap that posts.
