What is here begins with Esterbrook, the American pen name founded in Camden, New Jersey in 1858 and revived in 2018. The Estie comes in three finishes, and the choice between them is register rather than rank. Ebony is the plain answer, deep black with gold-tone trim. Tortoise is the senior one — tortoiseshell reads as horn-rimmed glasses and a corner office rather than anything bought to impress. Nouveau Bleu is the profession's own color and the most expressive of the three, which tends to make it the one people keep for themselves.
Each Estie barrel is turned from blended acrylic and finished to a high polish, so no two are figured quite alike. All three take a standard Schmidt-style refill, which means the pen outlives the ink by a long way.
Above the Estie sit the ballpoints you keep rather than hand across the desk. Pelikan's Souverän ballpoints are the matches to its fountain pens, in the same striped acetate and resin: the push-button K400 in black-green, the twist-action K800 in black with gold trim, and the K805 Stresemann in anthracite stripes with palladium trim for the lawyer who wears steel. S.T. Dupont's Classique is lacquer over solid brass, made at Faverges, with an articulated clip and the maison's own refill — the ballpoint for the partner who signs everything and fills nothing.
