The Woman in White is the tote that refuses to commit to one size of day — a full carryall that folds down to a handbag, for the calendar that runs from the 8:00 filing to the 8:00 reservation without a stop at home.

The conversion is the whole case. Most days split in two — the half that needs the laptop and the folder, and the half that needs neither — and most bags make you carry the first half's bag through the second half's evening. This one doesn't.

The name is the maker's, and this one was practically addressed to the profession. The Woman in White is Wilkie Collins's 1859 novel, serialized in Dickens's own magazine — and Collins was a trained barrister, called at Lincoln's Inn, who never practiced a day. He built the book instead the way a trial is built: a chain of witnesses, each testifying only to what they saw. Lawyers have been reading it on trains ever since.
