The Silk — Structured Leather Briefcase

The Silk is a structured full-grain briefcase for the lawyer building a practice on their own name rather than inheriting one — a silhouette that reads as chosen, not handed down.

The name is a rank. A barrister who takes silk trades a stuff gown for one of silk, the moment the profession stops describing what you do and starts describing what you are. We named the case for the promotion.

Modern, in a briefcase, mostly means nothing added. The Churchill carries a hundred years of convention on its face and wears it well. The Silk carries none: a squared line, a flat handle, a single brass lock at the front, and feet that let it stand on the floor beside counsel table rather than slump against a chair leg. It is not trying to look like an heirloom. It is trying to become one, which takes about a decade and starts the day you pick it up.

The leather is full-grain and vegetable-tanned. Vegetable tanning takes weeks where chrome tanning takes about a day, and the reason to accept that is what happens afterward: the hide darkens unevenly, holds the marks of the way you actually carry it, and after a few years looks like nobody else's. It does not arrive finished. It arrives started.

It closes on a brass key-lock over a structured frame that holds its shape empty as readily as full, with a padded sleeve sized to a 16-inch laptop. A frame-top case is built to stay open; this one is built to stay shut. Which of those you want is a real question, and it depends less on the leather than on what you carry and who is in the room.

Does it lock? Yes, on a solid brass key-lock, and that is the whole difference between this case and a frame-top one. A frame-top briefcase is built to stay open; The Silk is built to stay shut, because some of what goes into it should not be readable by anyone who lifts the lid.

What size laptop does it take? Up to 16 inches, in a padded interior sleeve. If you carry a 17-inch machine, the Churchill is the better case and we sell it a few clicks from here — we would rather tell you that than sell you a case your laptop does not fit.

Does it hold its shape when it is empty? Yes. The structured frame keeps the silhouette whether the case is full or not, and protective metal feet let it stand on the floor beside counsel table rather than slump against a chair leg.
