Our Story

Some great law firms have just two names on the door—and a reason those names belong together.

Founded by James Kaywell after twenty-five years in full-time legal practice — trying cases before judges and juries, sitting across the table at depositions and closings, and representing clients whose futures were on the line. The name traces back further still: James served as advertising manager of The Barrister, the student publication at the University of Virginia School of Law.

Our standard: every piece we carry is selected or commissioned against one test — built for a career, not a season, and fit to sit on the desk of someone whose judgment is on display. Barrister & Bespoke works the same way. One word is your advocate: the barrister who stands beside you, makes your case, and refuses to let your work go unsupported. The other is your standard: bespoke, the quiet insistence that what surrounds you should be as considered and specific as the argument you just won. Together they form something closer to a partnership than a shop name—two instincts that only function when combined. An advocate without standards is just noise. Standards without advocacy are merely objects on a shelf. We exist in the space between: an ally in your corner, insisting that the things you carry, keep on your desk, and reach for at the end of the day already say what your credentials do.

That career taught a simple, durable lesson: when you walk into the room, how you present yourself and what you carry speak before you do. The word stayed with him—fitting for a life spent in courtrooms and at negotiating tables, and now for a company built to serve that same profession.
