Our Story
Some great law firms have just two names on the door—and a reason those names belong together. Ours are no different. The first is your advocate: the barrister who stands up, makes the case, and does not let your work go unsupported. The second is your standard: bespoke, the quiet insistence that what surrounds you be as considered as the argument you just won. An advocate without standards is noise; standards without an advocate are objects on a shelf. We work in the space between.
Barrister & Bespoke was founded by James Kaywell after twenty-six years in full-time legal practice—trying cases before judges and juries, sitting across the table at depositions and closings, representing clients whose futures were on the line. That practice ran the profession's full range: large firms in Washington, D.C. and Miami, boutique firms and a prosecutor's office in Hawaii, law school teaching, and a practice of his own in Southwest Florida. James remains an active member of the District of Columbia Bar.
The name reaches back to the start of that career. At the University of Virginia School of Law, James served as editor and advertising manager of The Barrister, a student publication. The word stayed with him—along with a lesson every trial lawyer learns early: when you walk into the room, how you present yourself, and what you carry, speak before you do.
The question itself is familiar. A young lawyer notices what a partner carries into the conference room and, at the first decent pause, asks: where did you get that? What pen is that? The profession has always outfitted itself by word of mouth, because nobody has time for anything else. Barrister & Bespoke exists to be the answer—the recommendation, already made, by someone who spent a career in the rooms where the question gets asked.
We carry heritage leather goods—bags, portfolios, wallets, and desk accessories—alongside the writing instruments legal professionals still reach for: Pelikan and Esterbrook pens, chosen for balance, reliability, and quiet authority. And for the hour after the work is done, a small curation of cigar essentials—S.T. Dupont lighters and cutters, and humidors selected for both function and presence.
Every piece passes one test, applied the way a careful advocate chooses a case: built for a career, not a season, and fit to sit on the desk of someone whose judgment is on display. This is not luxury for its own sake. It is representation—of the work you have done, the standard you hold, and the image you have earned the right to project.
