About the lock, plainly: a combination deters curiosity, not burglary. What it actually does is keep the case shut in an overhead bin, keep a lid on a table of exhibits, and signal — accurately — that the contents weren't left out for browsing. The hinge is the working feature: it opens the case wide, so documents come out in the order you filed them, not the order gravity chose. One design, carried by men and women alike; the measurements are the fit.

The name is the maker's. Vendetta is Marie Corelli's 1886 novel — a man presumed dead returns under another name to settle his accounts. Corelli was the best-selling novelist of her era. The maker named a locked case after a book about a man keeping his own counsel; we assume that was deliberate.

Questions we are asked

Can the combination be reset? Yes, on the lock itself; the maker's instructions ship in the box. Set it before the first trip, not at the gate.

Is 5.3 lb heavy? It is the weight of a frame, a lock and full-grain hide, and it is carried by the handle, not the shoulder. Carried daily, it is a briefcase; carried to a closing, it is an argument.

Care. Vegetable-tanned Vachetta darkens with handling and sun; that is the leather working, not wearing out. Wipe dust with a dry cloth, keep it away from radiators, and condition lightly once a year with a colourless leather cream. Rain marks fade as the surrounding leather catches up.
