A Bend in the River — Women's Leather Backpack

A Bend in the River is the commute, solved — the leather backpack for the lawyer who arrives by Metro or by bicycle, in running shoes, with the day's real equipment riding behind her: the laptop, the lunch, sometimes a thermos, and the good leather pumps that will walk into the building on someone who never broke a sweat.

The ritual has a birthday. In April 1980 a transit strike stopped New York's subways and buses for eleven days, and the city's professional women walked to work in suits and sneakers, changing into their heels on arrival. The strike ended; the practice didn't — it spread city to city and became part of the permanent grammar of the commute. Our founder watched the Washington version through his years in D.C. practice: running shoes below a good suit on the Metro platform, the pumps stowed with the case files. The profession still holds occasional hearings on whether a backpack belongs at counsel table. It has never once questioned the commute.

Fourteen liters is the number that matters. It is the difference between a bag that carries a laptop and a bag that carries a morning — and still closes. The name is the maker's. A Bend in the River is V. S. Naipaul's 1979 novel; Naipaul took the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001.
