Shirley — Women's Leather Work Tote

Shirley is the larger of our two Time Resistance bags — a structured leather tote for the day that needs more than a handbag holds, and less than a briefcase is built for.

• Full-grain, vegetable-tanned Italian cowhide (Vachetta), hand-dyed by the maker

Full-grain means the entire top layer of the hide, where the fibers are densest — the leather that resists wear and takes on a patina instead of wearing out. The structure is the practical part: a bag that holds its shape stands upright when you set it down and opens flat when you reach into it, so you find things instead of excavating them. The studs on the base mean you can set it down on a floor you did not choose. The buckle on the front strap is decorative; the closures underneath are magnetic, and open with one hand while the other holds everything else.

On the file, precisely. A letter-size folder goes in and the bag closes over it — we checked with a file in hand rather than a tape measure. A motions folder with the case law printed out is exactly the errand this bag runs. A legal-size file does not fit: at fourteen inches it is longer than the bag will take in any direction, and no amount of angling solves it. If your practice runs to legal-size pleadings, that is the thing to know before you buy, and we would rather you knew it here.

The name is the maker's. Shirley is Charlotte Brontë's 1849 novel — the book that turned Shirley from a man's name into a woman's.
