Daniel Marshall Ambiente 65 Humidor — Black Matte

The Ambiente 65 is a hand-built American humidor for anyone who has decided this is the last one — sixty-five cigars in black matte lacquer, with 24-karat gold-plated hinges and a lock, built in California by a workshop that has been making humidors since 1982.

We argued for roughly fifty cigars in Field Guide No. 04 — a collection rather than a warehouse. This is that box. The sixty-five on the label is a corona count: Daniel Marshall rates its humidors at corona size, and puts this one at forty-five to fifty once the larger ring gauges go in. There is no Ambiente called a fifty; there is this one, which against the cigars a working collection actually holds is a fifty. A hundred and twenty-five would have been a different conversation.

Spanish cedar throughout, with two movable cedar dividers. A digital hygrometer and Daniel Marshall's own humidification system are fitted as standard. The hinges and the lock are plated in 24-karat gold, the finish is hand-applied black matte lacquer, and each humidor ships with an authenticity card.

Before First Use

A humidor arrives dry and must be seasoned before it will hold a climate. Wipe the interior cedar with a cloth dampened in distilled water, charge the humidification system, and close the humidor over a small dish of distilled water for 48 to 72 hours. Confirm the hygrometer holds steadily between 65% and 72% before loading cigars. Distilled water only — tap water carries minerals that stain cedar and foul a humidifier.

One note on price. Daniel Marshall also sells a Private Stock line — the same humidors, cosmetically graded down for small blemishes in the lacquer, sold without the Daniel Marshall name at a substantially lower price. Those carry the same lifetime warranty and function identically, and if that is what you want, buy it from them directly. What we stock is standard production: named, unmarked, and priced accordingly. If you find this model cheaper elsewhere, it is worth checking which of the two you are looking at.

Built to be the last humidor you buy. If what you want is fifty cigars at a working price, the Onyx is the box we point to and it costs a fraction of this. Buy the Ambiente for the maker and the lifetime. Capacity is not the argument either way.

Questions we get

Why sixty-five when you recommend fifty? It is a fifty. Daniel Marshall rates capacity at corona size, and puts this box at forty-five to fifty once the larger ring gauges go in. The number on the label and the number you will actually fit are two different things, and the spec list above quotes the first.

Does it need seasoning before I use it? Yes. A new humidor is not ready the day it arrives, and putting cigars into an unseasoned cedar box is how you spend a month wondering why they went dry. Season it first, and give the hygrometer two calibrated weeks before you trust it, which is the whole of Season It, or Ruin It?

What comes with it? A digital hygrometer, the Daniel Marshall humidification system, two movable Spanish cedar dividers and an authenticity card. The interior is Spanish cedar throughout; the hinges, lock and key are 24-karat gold-plated.

How much desk does it take? Eleven inches wide by eight and a half deep and four and a half high — a study desk or a credenza, not a closet.

Is it worth a hand-built American box over a cedar-lined one? Only if you mean to keep it. Both hold seventy percent. This one is also furniture, and it is the one you buy having decided it is the last one.

Why we carry it. Most humidors are assembled overseas to a price and warranted for a year. Daniel Marshall builds his in California and covers them for life — the same argument that earns Xikar its place here, applied to a box rather than a blade. The workshop exists because of one order: Marshall was making humidors by hand in 1982 when Alfred Dunhill sent a purchase order for a quarter of a million dollars, and he built the factory to fill it. Cigar Aficionado has twice rated his boxes at or near the top of the field — best buy of those tested in 1999, and first of the fourteen tested in 2003. Neither was this model, and we would rather say so than let those ratings do work they did not do.

Warranty. This Product carries Daniel Marshall's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, and Barrister & Bespoke's own Thirty-Day Assurance for the first thirty days after delivery.
