Daniel Marshall Ambiente 65 Humidor — Black Matte

The Ambiente 65 is a hand-built American humidor for the lawyer who has decided this is the last one — sixty-five cigars in black matte lacquer, with 24-karat gold-plated hinges and a lock, built in California by a workshop that has been making humidors since 1982.

We argued for roughly fifty cigars in Field Guide No. 04 — a collection rather than a warehouse. This holds sixty-five, because the Ambiente line begins at sixty-five and Daniel Marshall does not make a fifty. We would rather say so than pretend our own standard moved to fit the inventory. Fifteen cigars past the ideal, in a box measuring 11 by 8½ inches, is a difference you will not notice on a credenza. A hundred and twenty-five would have been a different conversation.

Spanish cedar throughout, with two movable cedar dividers. A digital hygrometer and Daniel Marshall's own humidification system are fitted as standard. The hinges and the lock are plated in 24-karat gold, the finish is hand-applied black matte lacquer, and each humidor ships with an authenticity card.

Before First Use

A humidor arrives dry and must be seasoned before it will hold a climate. Wipe the interior cedar with a cloth dampened in distilled water, charge the humidification system, and close the humidor over a small dish of distilled water for 48 to 72 hours. Confirm the hygrometer holds steadily between 65% and 72% before loading cigars. Distilled water only — tap water carries minerals that stain cedar and foul a humidifier.

One note on price. Daniel Marshall also sells a Private Stock line — the same humidors, cosmetically graded down for small blemishes in the lacquer, sold without the Daniel Marshall name at a substantially lower price. Those carry the same lifetime warranty and function identically, and if that is what you want, buy it from them directly. What we stock is standard production: named, unmarked, and priced accordingly. If you find this model cheaper elsewhere, it is worth checking which of the two you are looking at.

Questions we get

Why sixty-five when you recommend fifty? Because the Ambiente line begins at sixty-five and Daniel Marshall does not make a fifty. We argued for roughly fifty in the Field Guide and we still would; we would rather say so than pretend our own advice bends to what we happen to stock.

Does it need seasoning before I use it? Yes. A new humidor is not ready the day it arrives, and putting cigars into an unseasoned cedar box is how you spend a month wondering why they went dry. Season it first, and give the hygrometer two calibrated weeks before you trust it, which is the whole of Season It, or Ruin It?

What comes with it? A digital hygrometer, the Daniel Marshall humidification system, two movable Spanish cedar dividers and an authenticity card. The interior is Spanish cedar throughout; the hinges, lock and key are 24-karat gold-plated.

How much desk does it take? Eleven inches wide by eight and a half deep and four and a half high — a study desk or a credenza, not a closet.

Is it worth a hand-built American box over a cedar-lined one? Only if you mean to keep it. Both hold seventy percent. This one is also furniture, hand-built in California by a workshop making humidors since 1982, and it is the one you buy having decided it is the last one.
