Sheaffer 100 Pen — Coffee Brown with Gold Trim

Price$67.95

The Sheaffer 100 in coffee brown is the quietest pen we sell and the easiest to live with — a slim barrel in deep brown lacquer under PVD gold trim, marked by the cut-out clip that distinguishes the 100 from the heavier, slot-clipped 300. It is offered here as a fountain pen with a fine or medium gold-tone steel nib, as a rollerball, and as a ballpoint, all from the same barrel.

Brown is the colour a lawyer reaches for when black feels severe, and against gold it looks like something inherited rather than bought. Sheaffer calls the 100 the right impression at the right price, which is a fair description: it is the line's entry point, slimmer than the 300 and less money, and it is the pen we would give a law graduate who will carry it to a first job rather than put it in a drawer. It arrives ready to write.

Questions we are asked

The 100 or the 300? The 100 is the slimmer, lighter pen with the cut-out clip, and it costs less; the 300 is the fuller barrel with the slotted clip and the wide cap band, and it has more presence in the hand. If the pen will be carried in a shirt pocket all day, take the 100. If it will sit on a desk and be picked up to sign things, take the 300.

Fountain pen, rollerball or ballpoint? The fountain pen for the signature and the long memo; the rollerball for the same ink feel with nothing to clean; the ballpoint for carbonless forms, exhibit stickers and a jacket pocket. The Field Guide below argues all three.

Fine or Medium? Fine for margin notes and redlines, medium for the signature block. Both widths of this pen are stocked.

Does the fountain pen take bottled ink? Yes, with the Sheaffer 96700 piston converter, which replaces the cartridge and draws from a bottle. The pen ships with cartridges fitted, so it writes the day it arrives either way.

Where is it made? Made in India. Sheaffer is an American brand, founded in Iowa in 1913; its pens are currently manufactured in India.

Is the Sheaffer warranty valid in the United States? Yes. Sheaffer's mechanical guarantee runs two years from the date of purchase from an authorized retailer, covers defects in manufacturing and materials, and is international, with no geographical restriction. A defective component is replaced at Sheaffer's option. Claims go through us as the retailer, and the details are in our Warranty Policy.

Fountain, rollerball, or ballpoint — which one signs? Read Fountain, Rollerball, or Ballpoint?, and for the nib, Fine Nib, or Medium?

Choosing between the 100 in coffee brown and the 300s: this is the slim one, and the only one not in black or blue. For the fuller barrel with gold trim, see the Sheaffer 300 in glossy black with gold trim; for the plainest pen in the line, the Sheaffer 300 in matte black.
