Sheaffer 300 Pen — Matte Black with Black Trim

Price$72.00

The Sheaffer 300 in matte black is the pen a younger lawyer can carry into a deposition and not think about again — a full-sized American pen in matte black lacquer with polished black trim, boldly detailed with the slotted Sheaffer clip and the wide band at the cap. It is offered here as a fountain pen with a fine or medium steel nib, as a rollerball, and as a ballpoint, all from the same barrel.

Sheaffer has made writing instruments since 1913, when Walter A. Sheaffer, a jeweler in Fort Madison, Iowa, patented a lever filler so a pen could be refilled without the mess of a dip. The 300 is the modern descendant of that line: a pen with weight and presence at a price a first-year associate can justify, and the one we would hand someone who has been writing with whatever the firm's supply closet holds. It arrives ready to write.

Questions we are asked

Fountain pen, rollerball or ballpoint? The fountain pen for the signature and the long memo; the rollerball for the same ink feel with nothing to clean; the ballpoint for carbonless forms, exhibit stickers and a jacket pocket. The Field Guide below argues all three.

Fine or Medium? Fine for margin notes and redlines, medium for the signature block. Both widths of this pen are stocked, so the choice is yours rather than ours.

Does the fountain pen take bottled ink? Yes, with the Sheaffer 96700 piston converter, which replaces the cartridge and draws from a bottle. The pen ships with cartridges fitted, so it writes the day it arrives either way.

Is this a sensible gift for a new associate or a law graduate? It is the reason we carry the line. It is a real pen from a house with a century behind it, at a price that reads as thoughtful rather than extravagant, and it comes in a black Sheaffer box that opens like an eyeglass case.

Where is it made? Made in India. Sheaffer is an American brand, founded in Iowa in 1913; its pens are currently manufactured in India.

Is the Sheaffer warranty valid in the United States? Yes. Sheaffer's mechanical guarantee runs two years from the date of purchase from an authorized retailer, covers defects in manufacturing and materials, and is international, with no geographical restriction. A defective component is replaced at Sheaffer's option. Claims go through us as the retailer, and the details are in our Warranty Policy.

Fountain, rollerball, or ballpoint — which one signs? Read Fountain, Rollerball, or Ballpoint?, and for the nib, Fine Nib, or Medium?

Choosing between the matte black 300 and the rest of the line: this is the quiet one. For the same pen with gold-tone trim, see the Sheaffer 300 in glossy black with gold trim; for a slimmer barrel at a lower entry point, see the Sheaffer 100 in coffee brown.

Barrister & Bespoke Curated Collection — hand-selected from Sheaffer, the Iowa house that has made writing instruments since 1913, for its craftsmanship and fit within our world. Curated pieces carry their maker's own identity rather than ours; our house collection, designed and branded exclusively for Barrister & Bespoke, is marked separately throughout the shop.
