A Bend in the River — Women's Leather Backpack

Price$345.00

A Bend in the River is the commute, solved — the leather backpack for the lawyer who arrives by Metro or by bicycle, in running shoes, with the day's real equipment riding behind her: the laptop, the lunch, sometimes a thermos, and the good leather pumps that will walk into the building on someone who never broke a sweat.

The ritual has a birthday. In April 1980 a transit strike stopped New York's subways and buses for eleven days, and the city's professional women walked to work in suits and sneakers, changing into their heels on arrival. The strike ended; the practice didn't — it spread city to city and became part of the permanent grammar of the commute. Our founder watched the Washington version through his years in D.C. practice: running shoes below a good suit on the Metro platform, the pumps stowed with the case files. The profession still holds occasional hearings on whether a backpack belongs at counsel table. It has never once questioned the commute.

Fourteen liters is the number that matters. It is the difference between a bag that carries a laptop and a bag that carries a morning — and still closes. The clean, origami-inspired fold keeps it composed enough for an office doorway, and full-grain Vachetta does what nylon never will: it takes the commute personally, and improves for it.

The name is the maker's. A Bend in the River is V. S. Naipaul's 1979 novel; Naipaul took the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001.

Questions we are asked

Will a 15-inch laptop fit? No. The laptop compartment is sized for machines up to 13″; a larger laptop needs a larger bag.

Is a backpack acceptable in a law office? On the way in, yes. Whether it belongs at counsel table is a question the profession has not settled, which is why the bag that walks into the meeting is a different one.

What is the difference between the brown and the black? Colour only. Both are the same backpack: the same hand-dyed Vachetta, 14-liter capacity, compartments and measurements, and both ship in the maker's gift box.

Is it a good gift for a colleague who commutes on foot or by bike? It is a practical one for lawyers who arrive in running shoes and change at the desk, and it arrives in the maker's gift box.

The backpack's job is getting there. For the bag that walks into the meeting, see Shirley — or read Field Guide No. 08: The Shirley, or the Camilla? For a slim electronics carry once you've arrived, see Orlando.
