S.T. Dupont Slim 7 Lighter — Black Lacquer & Chrome

The S.T. Dupont Slim 7 in black lacquer and chrome is a torch lighter seven millimetres thick — the maison calls it "the world's thinnest luxury lighter", and we pass the claim on with its quotation marks. 1.6 ounces, 2.7 inches tall, a side-mounted igniter and a single wind-resistant torch flame. It is the lighter for counsel who carry a card case rather than a wallet, and want the lighter to disappear the same way.

The point is the profile: it lives in a shirt pocket or a jacket's ticket pocket and does not print through the cloth. The flame is a single torch, thin to match the body, and the maison rates it wind-resistant. The maison files the Slim 7 under cigarette lighters; it will light a cigar, but a wide foot takes patience, and the Maxijet or the Biggy is the better tool for that. We say so because a torch bought for the wrong job is returned, and a lighter that has been fuelled cannot be.

It is, by the maison's after-sales terms, replaced rather than repaired under warranty. It takes the maison's black butane refill and ships empty.

Questions we are asked

What does the 7 mean? The thickness, in millimetres. A Ligne 2 is 11; a Maxijet is 13.5.

Will it light a cigar? A corona or a robusto, yes. A 56 ring gauge on a windy day is a job for the Maxijet or the Biggy, and we would rather sell you the right one.

Can I fly with it? No. Torch lighters may not be carried aboard aircraft, so this is the one to leave at the law office rather than pack.

Can it be repaired? S.T. Dupont replaces rather than repairs this model: its after-sales terms state that a defective Minijet, Maxijet or Slim 7 is exchanged for an identical one. We would rather you knew that before buying than after.

Simon Tissot-Dupont opened a Paris workshop in 1872 making document cases, briefcases, and travel trunks for diplomats and businessmen — objects whose quality lived in hinges, locks, frames, and fittings. The lighter, four decades on, was the same discipline applied to a smaller object. The workshop has been at Faverges in the Haute-Savoie since 1924, took in its first master lacquerer in 1935, and holds the French state's Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant designation for living heritage craft. Warranty. This Product carries S.T. Dupont's two-year warranty against manufacturing defects, and Barrister & Bespoke's own Thirty-Day Assurance for the first thirty days after delivery.
