S.T. Dupont Ligne 2 Lighter — Black Lacquer & Palladium

Price$1,295.00

The S.T. Dupont Ligne 2 in black lacquer and palladium is the maison's classic soft-flame lighter in its plainest dress: a brass body under natural black Chinese lacquer, one band of palladium carrying the signature, and the hinged cap whose note the maison has spent eighty years tuning. It is the lighter for counsel who want the object recognised by the few and unremarked by the rest.

The maison calls the Ligne 2 "the most versatile S.T. Dupont lighter", and the reason is proportion: 2.4 by 1.5 inches, under half an inch thick, 4.4 ounces of brass that sits in a jacket pocket without announcing itself. The cap opens on a hinge and closes on the sound that has become the brand's signature — a clear ring the maison attributes to "meticulous adjustment of noble metal components". Lacquer softens the note slightly, which is why the Perfect Ping editions plate the cap instead of lacquering it. If the sound is the point, buy the Perfect Ping. If the unbroken lacquer is, buy this.

The flame is a soft yellow flame — the maison's specification calls it a double flame — lit by a roller flint. It toasts a cigar slowly and evenly indoors and lights a cigarette without ceremony; in a breeze it is at a disadvantage, and a torch does that job. It takes the maison's yellow gas refill and black flints, and ships empty.

Exhibit B — The maker's film

Two minutes thirty-seven, shot in the Faverges workshop, captions theirs. The hallmark is struck at 0:22 and the lacquer goes on at 0:54; the flame is tested at 1:58. That is most of what you are paying for. It is the last item in the gallery above.

Questions we are asked

How is this different from the Ligne 2 Perfect Ping? Same body, same flame, same hinge. The Perfect Ping plates its cap so the ring carries; this one lacquers the cap so the black is continuous from top to bottom. Quieter note, cleaner line.

Is a soft flame enough for a cigar? Indoors, yes, and it is the traditional light. Outdoors, or on a broad ring gauge, a torch does the job faster.

What fuel does it take? The maison specifies its yellow gas refill (ref. 000432) for the Ligne 2 and its black flints (ref. 000600). The black refill is for the torch models. It ships empty, as every lighter we sell does.

Can the warranty be extended? Yes. S.T. Dupont issues a two-year warranty card, and activating the Digital Passport — the QR code that ships with a French-made piece carrying a serial number — adds six months, counted from the purchase date rather than the activation date.

Barrister & Bespoke Curated Collection — hand-selected from S.T. Dupont, the Paris maison that has made leather cases since 1872 and lighters since 1941, for its craftsmanship and fit within our world. Curated pieces carry their maker's own identity rather than ours; our house collection, designed and branded exclusively for Barrister & Bespoke, is marked separately throughout the shop.

Why we carry it. S.T. Dupont began where we did. Simon Tissot-Dupont opened a Paris workshop in 1872 making document cases, briefcases, and travel trunks for diplomats and businessmen — objects whose quality lived in hinges, locks, frames, and fittings. The lighter, four decades on, was the same discipline applied to a smaller object. The workshop has been at Faverges in the Haute-Savoie since 1924, took in its first master lacquerer in 1935, and holds the French state's Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant designation for living heritage craft. We sell leather cases for a living. So did they, first.

Warranty. This Product carries S.T. Dupont's two-year warranty against manufacturing defects, and Barrister & Bespoke's own Thirty-Day Assurance for the first thirty days after delivery. Lighters ship unfueled. Full terms, including how to make a claim, are stated in our Warranty Policy.

Returns. A lighter may be returned within thirty days if it is unused and in its original packaging. Every lighter ships unfueled; once butane has been added it is Final Sale and cannot be returned or exchanged, except where it arrives damaged, defective, or materially different from its description. Full terms are in our Returns & Exchanges Policy.
