S.T. Dupont Monogram 1872 Ashtray — Porcelain, Grey

Price$525.00

The S.T. Dupont Monogram 1872 ashtray in grey porcelain is a rectangular tray 8.7 by 6.7 inches with two gilt rests at opposite corners and the maison's monogram — 1872, its founding year, set as a repeating pattern — across the well. Notches and borders are painted by hand. It is the ashtray for a study or a desk where the object will be looked at longer than it is used.

The ashtray is the ritual's punctuation: a proper rest lets a cigar pause mid-conversation without going out. Two rests means two cigars, which is the right number for a closing. Porcelain wipes clean; wash it by hand, because the painted borders were not made for a dishwasher.

Grey is the quiet one of the three colours the maison makes it in. It sits with a black lacquer lighter without competing, and with a walnut desk without disappearing.

Questions we are asked

What is 1872? The year Simon Tissot-Dupont opened his first workshop in Paris, making leather cases. The monogram is the maison's own logotype, repeated.

How many cigars does it hold? Two, one at each corner rest.

Is it dishwasher safe? We would not. The borders and notches are painted by hand; wash it by hand.

Does it match a lighter? The maison makes lighters and a cutter stand in the same pattern. We do not stock them today; the black lacquer Ligne 2 is the lighter we would put beside it.

Deciding between cutters, lighters, humidors, and ashtrays? Read A Cigar, Counselor?.

Built for the desk. For a rest that reads as furniture at a lower price, see the Wood & Crystal ashtray; to cut and light what rests on it, the S.T. Dupont cutter stand and the Ligne 2.

Barrister & Bespoke Curated Collection — hand-selected from S.T. Dupont, the Paris maison that has made leather cases since 1872 and lighters since 1941, for its craftsmanship and fit within our world. Curated pieces carry their maker's own identity rather than ours; our house collection, designed and branded exclusively for Barrister & Bespoke, is marked separately throughout the shop.

Why we carry it. S.T. Dupont began where we did. Simon Tissot-Dupont opened a Paris workshop in 1872 making document cases, briefcases, and travel trunks for diplomats and businessmen — objects whose quality lived in hinges, locks, frames, and fittings. The lighter, four decades on, was the same discipline applied to a smaller object. The workshop has been at Faverges in the Haute-Savoie since 1924, took in its first master lacquerer in 1935, and holds the French state's Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant designation for living heritage craft. We sell leather cases for a living. So did they, first.

Warranty. This Product carries S.T. Dupont's two-year warranty against manufacturing defects, and Barrister & Bespoke's own Thirty-Day Assurance for the first thirty days after delivery. Full terms, including how to make a claim, are stated in our Warranty Policy.
