S.T. Dupont Biggy Lighter — Diamond Head, Chrome

The S.T. Dupont Biggy Diamond Head in chrome is the maison's torch-flame lighter with its guilloché cut over the whole body — cap, panels and back — in chrome. It is the Biggy for counsel who want the pattern the Ligne 2 is known for, behind a flame that holds on a terrace.

The maison's description is "the elegance of Line 2 with the power of the Megajet", and that is accurate in both halves: the proportions, the diamond head pattern and the signature band are the Ligne 2's, scaled up to 2.9 by 1.5 inches; the flame is a 2 cm torch that the maison rates for "exceptional lighting on any occasion". Press the fluted roller and the cap lifts to expose the burner. In the hand it is a substantial thing — 3.6 ounces, heavier than a Slim 7 and a Minijet together — which is why it reads as a desk object first and a pocket lighter second.

A torch is the light for a terrace, a porch and a wide ring gauge. It is also the light you cannot take on an aircraft. It takes the maison's black butane refill and ships empty.

Questions we are asked

Why choose a torch over a soft flame? Wind and ring gauge. A torch lights a broad cigar foot evenly and survives a breeze; a soft flame is the indoor, traditional light.

Can I fly with it? No. Torch lighters may not be carried aboard aircraft, so this is the one to leave at the law office rather than pack.

Does the guilloché mark or wear? It hides marks better than a polished flat, and the maison's care advice is the same for both: a soft cloth, nothing solvent-based.

Is it too large for a pocket? It is the biggest body in the range and reads as a desk object. If you want the same pattern in a body sized to a jacket pocket, the Slimmy Diamond Head is the answer.

The lighter, four decades on, was the same discipline applied to a smaller object. The workshop has been at Faverges in the Haute-Savoie since 1924, took in its first master lacquerer in 1935, and holds the French state's Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant designation for living heritage craft.
