Ryder Leather Dopp Kit

The Ryder Leather Dopp Kit is a full-grain leather travel kit for the lawyer whose practice does not stay in one courthouse — the out-of-county hearing, the two-day deposition, the trial that runs a week longer than the calendar said.

Korchmar cuts it from full-grain American cowhide, aniline-dyed so the natural markings of each hide stay visible, and finishes it by hand in the workshop's own factory. It is fully lined in yarn-dyed cotton twill, closes with a single top zip, and the snap-down ends open out when the case runs long and the kit has to hold more than it was packed with. No two are identical; the grain is the point.

Questions we are asked

Will it fit in a carry-on alongside a suit? Yes. At eleven inches it lies flat across the bottom of a standard carry-on or in the main compartment of a weekend bag.

What do the snaps at the ends do? Unsnapped, the ends fold out and the opening widens, so a full-size bottle or a razor case goes in without a fight. Snapped, it keeps a neat, squared shape.

Is the lining waterproof? No — it is cotton twill, chosen because it wears well and does not crack. Keep liquids capped or in a small pouch inside.

Is it a good gift for a lawyer? Yes, for lawyers who travel for hearings, depositions and trials. It is used every morning of every trip, it comes in black or brown, and it carries Korchmar's five-year warranty.

Care. Wipe surface dirt with a soft, barely damp cloth and condition occasionally with a mild leather cream. Aniline leather darkens and softens with handling; that is the patina, not wear.
