Esterbrook Estie Fountain Pen — Tortoise & Gold

Price$195.00

The Esterbrook Estie Fountain Pen in Tortoise is the first fountain pen worth putting in a lawyer's briefcase — tortoise-figured blended acrylic, turned and high-polished, finished with gold-tone trim, and fitted with a stainless steel nib made in Germany by JoWo. Steel is the working nib: consistent from the first stroke, forgiving of a hurried hand, and priced so that the pen is carried and used rather than kept for best.

It is offered here in Fine and Medium, and the choice matters more than it looks. Fine is the width for the redline and the deposition note taken at speed; Medium lays the broader, wetter line a signature is built on. The pen in the photograph is representative, not identical to the one that arrives. The Estie fills by cartridge or converter and takes standard international cartridges, and its cushion cap seals the nib against drying between uses.

If you want the same pen with a solid gold nib — the pen for the moment that gets remembered — see the Estie Fountain Pen, 18K, in Tortoise.

On why width matters more than it looks — read Fine Nib, or Medium?

Built for the working hand — the redline, the margin note, the signature — not the once-a-year inscription. For a daily writer with no nib to manage, see the Estie Rollerball in Tortoise.

Questions we get

Fine or medium, really? The single most common way to end up with a pen you never reach for is buying the wrong width. Choose Fine if you write small, take notes on a legal pad, or mark up drafts; choose Medium if the pen is mostly for signing and you like a wetter, broader line. We argue both in Fine Nib, or Medium?

Is a steel nib a compromise? Not for this job. Steel is firm, consistent and hard to damage, which is what a pen carried daily needs; gold is softer and settles to its owner over months, which is why it is the pen given at a beginning. If you want gold, we carry it in the same finish.

Will it dry out if I only use it now and then? The cushion cap seats with a secondary seal against exactly that, so the pen writes on the first stroke after a week in a drawer.

How does it fill? Cartridge or converter, and it accepts standard international cartridges — so ink is never a special order. See Esterbrook cartridges, the Esterbrook converter, or Pelikan 4001 bottled ink.

Barrister & Bespoke Curated Collection — hand-selected from Esterbrook, the American pen name founded in Camden, New Jersey in 1858 and revived in 2018, for its craftsmanship and fit within our world. Curated pieces carry their maker's own identity rather than ours; our house collection, designed and branded exclusively for Barrister & Bespoke, is marked separately throughout the shop.
