S.T. Dupont Line D Eternity Fountain Pen — Black Lacquer

The S.T. Dupont Line D Eternity in Black Lacquer is the fountain pen for the lawyer who wants the finish, not the mechanism, to be the point. It is a Large-size cartridge pen with a black-finished 14-karat solid gold nib, dressed entirely in black — Dupont's lacquer over the body, satin black trim, the maison's Sword articulated clip — and finished in the Faverges workshop that lacquers the Ligne 2 lighter on this site. Across a table it reads as a black pen. That is the point.

Lacquer is the argument. The maison has kept a master lacquerer at Faverges since 1935, and the film below shows the finish going on. Where the Pelikans here make their case from the piston and the nib, the Line D makes it from the surface — the part you hold, and the part that shows across a closing table. It fills from a Dupont cartridge, or from a bottle with the converter that comes in the box, and the nib is solid gold under its black finish. The mechanism is conventional. The finish is not.

Questions we are asked

Cartridge or bottle? Either. Dupont's cartridges drop in — 040112 in blue, 040110 in black, with red, green and turquoise also made — and the converter in the box draws from a bottle; the maison's inkwell in black is 040165.

Line D or M1000? Finish or reservoir. The M1000 is a piston filler that holds about 1.35 ml, and it is the pen to buy if capacity and the ritual of filling are the argument. The Line D takes a cartridge and puts everything into the lacquer. They are the two ends of what a fountain pen can be for.

Is it a gift for a lawyer? It is the one to give when the M1000 would be too visible. All black, one engraved D on the cap top, nothing that reads as a logo across a table, and it writes from a cartridge the day it arrives. We do not engrave it, so it arrives as the maison finished it.

Simon Tissot-Dupont opened a Paris workshop in 1872 making document cases, briefcases, and travel trunks for diplomats and businessmen — objects whose quality lived in hinges, locks, frames, and fittings. The lighter, four decades on, was the same discipline applied to a smaller object. The workshop has been at Faverges in the Haute-Savoie since 1924, took in its first master lacquerer in 1935, and holds the French state's Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant designation for living heritage craft.
