Esterbrook Estie Rollerball — Ebony & Gold

The Esterbrook Estie Rollerball in Ebony is the pen a working lawyer actually carries — deep-black blended acrylic with gold-tone trim, laying down the wet, unbroken line a fountain pen gives without a nib to manage. It is the daily writer: legal-pad notes in a deposition, margin marks on a draft, the signature at the end of a letter that should look like it meant something.

The barrel is turned from blended acrylic and finished to a high polish, so no two are quite alike in figure. The Estie's cushion cap seats with a secondary seal that keeps the point from drying between uses — the difference between a pen that writes on the first stroke Monday morning and one that skips.

Which refill does it take, and can I buy them anywhere? A Schmidt-style rollerball refill (Esterbrook ref. E104 blue / E105 black); the format is common and any pen shop stocks an equivalent.

Will it dry out if I leave it capped for a week? The secondary seal in the cap is there for exactly that; a rollerball left capped over a holiday writes on the first stroke.

Is it a reasonable firm gift for a new class of associates? Yes — identical across a run, useful from the first day, and it asks nothing of the recipient. We do not engrave, so it arrives as the maker made it.

How does the warranty work? Esterbrook's factory warranty covers the pen against mechanical failure and manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship for one year from purchase; normal wear, misuse, accident, loss and consumables are not covered. Registering the pen on Esterbrook's site after purchase extends the warranty. For the first thirty days we handle any failure ourselves; after that, claims go to Esterbrook directly at info@esterbrookpens.com or (516) 741-0011, with proof of purchase.
