Madame Bovary is the jewelry roll — soft leather with fitted compartments that keep the earrings, the rings, and the watch separated, cushioned, and exactly where you packed them, from the top of the suitcase to the hotel safe. It is for the lawyer who travels for a week of hearings and would rather not arrive with a knot of chains.

The name is the maker's, and the profession will enjoy it. Madame Bovary was prosecuted in 1857 for offending public morals and acquitted within the month — an acquittal that promptly made it the best-selling book in France. It should be said that Emma Bovary's ruin was never the jewelry; it was the promissory notes. Keep the first properly, mind the second, and you will do better than she did.

Questions we are asked

Will a watch fit? A dress watch, yes, in one of the zip pockets; a large sports watch with a metal bracelet is a tight fit and better off in its own case.

Does it close securely enough for a carry-on? Rolled and tied, nothing inside moves. It is the roll, not a clasp, that keeps things in place, so roll it firmly.

Is it a reasonable gift for a new admit or a colleague? It is the smallest Time Resistance piece we carry and the one least likely to be wrong, which is most of what a gift needs to be.

Care. Vegetable-tanned Vachetta darkens with handling and sun; that is the leather working, not wearing out. Wipe dust with a dry cloth, keep it away from radiators, and condition lightly once a year with a colourless leather cream. Rain marks fade as the surrounding leather catches up.
