Fifteen card slots is not indulgence. It is the bar card, the building pass, the backup card, the insurance cards, and the loyalty programs you deny belonging to — each in a place, none in a pocket. A zip-around holds it shut over a coin pocket, which is the difference between a wallet and a handbag lottery.

The name is the maker's, and it is exactly right. Excellent Women is Barbara Pym's 1952 novel about the capable women who quietly keep everything running while the credit lands elsewhere. In 1977 the Times Literary Supplement asked leading writers to name the century's most underrated novelist; Pym was the only name given twice, and her reputation was remade overnight. A wallet that organizes everything and shows off nothing could hardly be called anything else.
