The Estie Fountain Pen in Nouveau Bleu, fitted with the solid 18K gold Medium nib, is the pen for the moment that gets remembered — a swearing-in, a partnership vote, an inscription on the flyleaf of a book handed to a new admit. The barrel is swirled deep-blue blended acrylic with gold-tone trim; the nib is solid 18-karat gold, made in Germany by JoWo, and it is offered in Medium alone, which is the width a signature wants.

A gold nib is not louder than a steel one; it is quieter. The metal has a give that steel does not, so it settles over months into the way its owner writes — a reason a good fountain pen is given at a beginning rather than an end. The Estie fills by cartridge or converter and takes standard international cartridges, and its cushion cap seals the nib against drying between the occasions this pen is likely to see.

Medium is the only width offered in the 18K, and it is the right one. A fine nib is for the redline and the deposition note taken at speed; a medium lays the broader, wetter line a signature and an inscription are built on. If you want a fine gold nib for daily note-taking, this is not that pen.

Questions we get

Why is it offered in Medium only? Because a medium is the width a signature wants. A fine nib is for the redline and the deposition note taken at speed; a medium lays the broader, wetter line an inscription is built on. If you want a fine gold nib for daily note-taking, this is not that pen.

Is a gold nib actually better than steel? Not louder — quieter. Eighteen-karat gold has a give that steel does not, so the nib settles over months into the way its owner writes. That is the reason a good fountain pen is given at a beginning rather than an end.

Will it dry out if I only use it for occasions? The cushion cap seats with a secondary seal against exactly that, which matters for a pen likely to sit between a swearing-in and a partnership vote. A pen used twice a year is still a pen that has to write on the first stroke.

How does it fill? Cartridge or converter, and it accepts standard international cartridges — so ink is never a special order.

Once a pen has been inked it is Final Sale and cannot be returned or exchanged, except where it arrives damaged, defective, or materially different from its description.
